Is Mineral Filled Polycarbonate a well-known product in its industry?

In recent years, the mineral filled polycarbonate (PC) industry has witnessed some developments and innovations.

Environmental Protection and Performance Innovation

On December 4, 2023, Sanyang Society announced that its self-developed environmentally friendly transparent flame-retardant polycarbonate (PC) had passed the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) test, without detecting any harmful ingredients. This material, based on silicon-based polycarbonate (Si-PC), does not require the addition of halogen flame retardants, and possesses excellent transparency, impact strength, and chemical resistance. Sanyang Society plans to apply this material in automobiles, home appliances, soundproof walls, and medical equipment, expanding the market application of environmentally friendly materials.

Capacity Expansion and Technological Advancements

On May 29, 2024, Wanhua Chemical released a draft for public comment on the environmental impact report for its PC expansion and renovation project in the Yantai Industrial Park, increasing total PC capacity from 480,000 tons per year to 600,000 tons per year. Wanhua Chemical is accelerating the development of high-end PC applications to address the challenges of deepening industrial chain integration and intensifying competition among low-end products.

Breakthroughs in Medical Applications

Covestro has launched Apec® 2045 copolymer polycarbonate, which exhibits extremely high heat resistance and is suitable for the production of medical equipment such as respiratory masks. This material can reduce production time and costs while maintaining high quality and performance, providing a new option for medical equipment manufacturers.

Innovations in Automotive Materials

SABIC's LNP™ ELCRES™ SLX1271SR resin is specifically designed for the automotive industry, featuring enhanced scratch and abrasion resistance, as well as a high-gloss surface finish. This material not only enhances the aesthetics and durability of paint-free car bodies but is also suitable for outdoor infrastructure components such as computer electronic shells and solar panels.

Sustainable Development Efforts

Trinseo has utilized physical recycling technology to provide a complementary solution for recycled PC waste streams, enabling recycled raw materials to be used in more fields. Products like CALIBRE™ ECO50 grade utilize 50% recycled PC raw materials, significantly reducing the carbon footprint compared to traditional fossil-based products.

Lightweight Innovation and Electronics Upgrades

Teijin's Tenax™ TPCL carbon fiber thermoplastic prepreg and Panlite® Sheet PC products have been used in the case of the world's lightest portable display, VAIO Vision+™, showcasing the potential of PC in lightweight applications and driving innovation in electronics and other industries. Mitsubishi Chemical's high-performance PC resin XANTAR™ K series has been selected for the case of the smartphone "Nothing Phone (2a)," featuring excellent transparency, impact resistance, and heat resistance, improving the scratch resistance of PC resins and suitable for smartphone cases and automotive interior parts.

These developments reflect the dynamic nature of the mineral filled polycarbonate industry, with ongoing advancements in material performance, sustainability, and applications across various sectors.
